Circadian rhythms constrain leaf and canopy gas exchange in an Amazonian forest

چکیده
[1] We used a controlled-environment leaf gas-exchange system and the micrometeorological technique eddy covariance to determine whether circadian rhythms constrain the rates of leaf and canopy gas exchange in an Amazonian forest over a day. When exposed to continuous and constant light for 20 to 48 hours leaves of eleven of seventeen species reduced their photosynthetic rates and closed their stomata during the normally dark period and resumed active gas exchange during the normally light period. Similarly, the rate of whole-forest CO2 uptake at a predetermined irradiance declined during the late afternoon and early morning and increased during the middle of the day. We attribute these cycles to circadian rhythms that are analogous to ones that have been reported for herbaceous plants in the laboratory. The importance of endogenous gas exchange rhythms presents a previously unrecognized challenge for efforts to both interpret and model landatmosphere energy and mass exchange. Citation: Doughty, C. Seasonal variation in the maximum rate of leaf gas exchange of canopy and understory tree species in an Amazonian semi-deciduous forest
Leaf gas exchange, water potential, and specific leaf area of two tropical semi-deciduous tree species, Brosimum lactescens S. Moore and Tovomita schomburgkii Planch & Triana, were quantified to establish how these properties were affected by seasonal variations in rainfall and leaf canopy position. The study was conducted at a site near Sinop Mato Grosso, Brazil, which is located within the ec...

Circadian rhythms have significant effects on leaf-to-canopy scale gas exchange under field conditions
BACKGROUND Molecular clocks drive oscillations in leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and other cell and leaf-level processes over ~24 h under controlled laboratory conditions. The influence of such circadian regulation over whole-canopy fluxes remains uncertain; diurnal CO2 and H2O vapor flux dynamics in the field are currently interpreted as resulting almost exclusively from direct phy...

We observed diurnal and seasonal patterns of leaf-scale gas exchange within the crown of a Dipterocarpus sublamellatus Foxw. tree growing in a lowland dipterocarp forest at Pasoh, Peninsular Malaysia. Observations were carried out nine times over 6 years, from September 2002 to December 2007. Observation periods included both wet and mild-dry periods, and natural and saturated photosynthetic ph...

Whole-plant photosynthetic rate of rose (cv. Kardinal) was measured with an open system consisting of a computer-controlled data acquisition system and an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA). The system was used to monitor diurnal patterns of whole-plant gas exchange in response to environmental variables and a model to simulate this was constructed. A model for leaf photosynthesis was calibrated and ...
